Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is often preferred by heterosexual couples who want to give the sperm a bit more help in finding the way to the egg at the optimum time, and by single women and same-sex female couples with no fertility issues who are using donor sperm. If medically indicated this is a good option for people who would prefer a less invasive and lower cost treatment.

However, the success rates of this treatment are lower than IVF and if multiple cycles are required the cost can become equivalent to that of IVF. This means that, particularly for people using donated sperm, it is wise to consider carefully both options before making a choice.
